Project Scope

FAST TRACK DESIGN – 12 MONTHS FROM PROGRAMMING TO CONSTRUCTION COMPLETION

Alief Early College High School involved the design and planning of a 25,000 SF building housed in the first two stories of a cast-in-place parking structure of 1,000 parking spaces and an Outdoor Learning Center. This project created a gathering of pedestrian routes and plaza to connect the new Early College to the existing Alief Campus, allowing students to share amenities like the library, auditorium, food court, labs, and computer classrooms

Project OBJECTIVE

The objective of this project was to promote the importance of higher education.

The Texas Education Agency awarded the Alief Independent School District a grant to help create and sustain an Early College High School.  In partnership with Houston Community College (HCC), Alief Early College High School (AECHS) is a school that combines high school and college in a supportive, yet rigorous educational environment.

Located on the HCC Alief Campus, AECHS gives prospective first-generation college students and others typically underrepresented in higher education the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree or college hours toward an Associate’s Degree.

AUTOARCH worked with the Alief Independent School District in a partnership with Houston Community College (HCC) to design the Alief Early College High School (AECHS). This 25,000 SF educational facility is housed within the first two stories of a 1000-space parking garage structure. The facility is designed to accommodate 400 students and includes 14 classrooms, two labs, and many other program spaces. AUTOARCH’s design creates a gathering of pedestrian routes and a plaza connecting the new high school to the existing Alief Community College campus allowing students to share the existing college’s amenities, including a library, auditorium, food court, labs, and computer classrooms.

The objective of this project was to promote the importance of higher education, and it is hoped that the sharing of facilities and resources made possible by the proximity of the high school to the community college will motivate the kids to pursue college degrees. HCC and Alief ISD are passionate about providing excellence in education. The design of this building helped establish a school identity, developed inviting exterior spaces that encourage student body gathering and interaction, and created a productive environment in which students’ needs can be fulfilled.
